The therapy of painting and colouring

Sometimes simple things can help calm our minds. Focusing on simple, repetitive tasks promotes concentration and helps to replace negative thoughts, creating a state of peace. Colouring ourselves content in a world that is in constant communication through iphones, ipads, and television, to name but a few, the simple art of colouring in has been welcomed by many. Its benefits include relaxation, improved sleep and a greater ability to deal with stress. Whether you choose painting, colouring, drawing, craft or needlework activities, allowing yourself some time to focus on this type of practical therapy can really help.

The artist, Jean Haines, uses colour in her painting to help lift her mood and expresses how painting has changed her life for the better by being calmer and more confident. She also believes that she is able to deal with problems more easily.

“I know that, when I paint, I feel differently. Whatever has been happening, I can change my mood or calm down simply by moving a brush … I do believe painting is a tonic that everyone can enjoy. No matter what age you are, no matter how healthy you are. No matter what you are going through. Painting this way is for everyone. And anyone.”
