OUR CHATTERING MIND
We can control what we eat, which is why we may overeat and put on weight, or not eat enough and become anorexic when we are depressed or anxious. But with focus and effort WE CAN ALSO CONTROL WHAT WE THINK – we are not what we think as a lot of our thoughts have been placed in our mind by what people may have said about us over many years, what we have heard on the television or radio, read on Facebook or Twitter.
By changing our way of thinking through being just a little more kind to ourselves, we can very slowly move towards recovery. The change of thinking may be bought about through trying to use a different way of speaking – by changing “I must”, “I should” or “I am useless” to “I may”, “I am okay” and “I’m doing the best I can”, we can begin to remold our way of thinking, these are similar to what people call ‘internal positive affirmations’.
However it can be quite difficult to change our entrenched way of thinking, especially if we feel that we are not worth it, so sometimes asking ourselves “What would I say to my best friend?” might help bring about a gentle approach that you may also use for yourself.
